GMA says "I am one president who has not benefited from jueteng". Now if you believe that, that's your own lookout. With the scandal about to erupt, let's see if GMA goes the way of Erap. One thing about Gloria, though, she is never shy in using her powers. Meantime her civil society allies can set aside their cherished principles while the sailing is rough; after all what are friends for.
That aside,I believe it is time to rethink our attitude towards the game. Evil maybe it is but there must be some accommodation of the human nature; after all man is not born an angel. Legalizing jueteng would at least make it possible to funnel the "wasted" money back in the form of social services or public works. If my moron of a neighbor chooses to spend his last peso on jueteng instead of feeding his son, so be it; unfortunate indeed but the cop would have far better chances taking the kid to DSWD for feeding than running after the gambling lord who probably has good connections with untouchables.
Besides, shielding man from evil does not seem to be a good idea; doing so appears to breed more sinister evil than that we are shielding society from. I suppose society is like the human body; it grows more resistant and resilient when exposed to the elements rather than sheltered. A weakling a boy becomes because the ever caring, super loving mama is always around to ward off big bad wolves.
The government, like a parent, should learn to leave enough alone. Legalizing jueteng is simply allowing the individual to decide for himself and suffer the consequences of his misbehavior. It is not succumbing to evil but containing and managing it. Whoever said evil could be killed?
